The Longwood Lancers men's golf team had a rocky start to open the spring season this past weekend. Longwood finished thirteenth out of 15 teams who competed in the Wendy's Charleston Shootout hosted by Charleston Southern University. The Lancers shot a 54-hole score of 920 (309-310-301) during play on Sunday and Monday. The University of Georgia won the event with its score of 846 (280-286-280). The Links at Stono Ferry in Hollywood, South Carolina near Charleston was the site of the tournament.
Junior Michael Young led Longwood with rounds of 73-75-73 for a 221 total. Young finished tied for 18th-place. Sophomores Bobby Fox (76-75-72--223, t-30th), Austin Gray (79-81-77--237, t-65th), and Ross Sumner (81-79-79--239, t-71st), along with senior Adam Webb (DQ-84-80, 83rd) rounded out the scores for Longwood. University of Georgia golfer Russell Henley took home individual medalist honors shooting rounds of 69-69-69--207 among the 83 golfers. Webb's tournament appearance included a disqualification in the first round. Head golf coach Kevin Fillman was not available to answer any questions about his team's performance.
The Lancers will take to the course again on March 8-9 at the Lonnie Barton Invitational hosted by Long Island University in Pooler, Ga. During the fall season, Longwood racked up four top-five finishes in five events. They hope to keep that momentum up this semester even with the disappointing finish at their first tournament.
