Letter to the Editor
Issue date: 2/24/10 Section: Opinion
Editor, The Rotunda:
I am writing this letter on behalf of the Task Force on Unrecognized and Off-Campus Groups (TFUOG), and as Chairman of the University Judicial Board, to address some questions and concerns about the newly-created task force. I created the Task Force, with the support of Director Sullivan and SGA President Patterson, to start a dialogue regarding our off-campus and unrecognized groups. The task force was created to address the situation with all groups that are not recognized by the university, not just "Zeta Chi Alpha," or "Delta." The Task Force is applicable to all off-campus groups. In no way do we seek to single out any one group.
The purpose of this Task Force is to: 1. Discuss the situation and 2. Make recommendations to the university administration. The Task Force has representatives from university student groups, such as the College Pan-Hellenic Council, the Inter-Fraternity Council, the SGA Senate, the National Pan-Hellenic Council and the Honor and Judicial Boards. At our first meeting, the Task Force voted unanimously to term the situation with off-campus groups as "a University Community problem." Currently, there is nothing within our Student Code of Conduct or Student Handbook that addresses off-campus or un-recognized groups. One question that the Task Force will consider is whether or not there needs to be such language within our Code.
As with any situation, there needs to be a formal dialogue to sort out the facts, and to gather feelings, and this is why the Task Force is present. Because this is a Task Force, it is only temporary, and will dissolve once recommendations have been communicated to the administration.
If you have any comments, questions or concerns for the Task Force or for me, please e-mail me at Thomas.Miles@live.longwood.edu. I would like to hear your feedback on the Task Force.
