Longwood University's Student Engagement Committee under Student Affairs has come up with a way to get students involved and more active with the campus events. The committee consists of Assistant Director of Student Activities William"Billy" Boulden, Associate Dean of Students/ Executive Director of Residential and Commuter Life (RCL) Larry Robertson, Assistant Director of Disability Support Services Maggie Butler, Anthony Brumfield, Jennifer Huddleson, Laonny Caloughn, Marian Wallterk.

The program is called the Spir-it Event program. According to Boulden, the program started on Mon., Jan. 25. Students will receive a calendar with a list of events that are taking place all over campus, from athletic games to Lancer Productions events to Career Center programs. Students will have a punch card, which allows them to attend 5 of the calendar events. After attending the programs and events, students' names will be entered into a raffle for multiple prizes. Students can get a new punch card every time they fill one up. There is no limit to the number of punch cards each student can get. The prizes will include gift cards from Moe's Southwest Grill and Chick-Fil-A, banks, movies and electronics. A business card holder will be donated from the Career Center and the athletic department will be giving away T-shirts. There will be a grand prize raffled off at the end of the semester. Boulden nor Robertson would give any hint as to what the grand prize will be. Robertson said, "The plan is to announce the grand prize at Late Night Breakfast in May."

The goal of the program is to lure students into attending events they would not normally attend, in hopes that later on students will enjoy the events on campus. Butler said, "This is a gateway for students to get out of their comfort zone and participate in other events and experience new people and other students."

Boulden said,"With this program we can start to highlight and recognize students for attending all different types of events. It's great if you attend athletic events. It's great if you attend Lancer Productions events. It's great if you attend events the Career Center is hosting to better prepare yourself for the future."

Boulden added, "Athletes are going to feel like their campus community supports them. If more students go to Lancer Productions events, they are going to know if they are bringing the right events to our students. If students are attending events the Career Center is hosting, they are going to get feedback on events they are doing on how to improve those event so more students want to come to it. I think just in general, all campus events are going to be evaluated."

Students will be able to obtain the punch cards at the featured events or in Boulden's office in the Student Union, room 204.
