Alpha Kappa Alpha (AKA) Sorority, Inc. brought back their "Fit Club Challenge" from last semester with some changes to make it even more efficient. "Last semester when we had our wrap-up, we tried to identify what people liked and what they didn't like about the program. We sent a survey to everyone that had participated and then as a chapter we talked about what went well and what didn't go well," explained AKA Programs Director Jameka Jones.
Jones explained that one of the biggest changes is the weekly weigh-in. She explained they had a lot of faculty and staff who only have that hour-long lunch break and they would spend it in weigh-in. This time, the weigh-ins will be all day on Monday. Participants can just come into the gym and either weigh themselves or get an attendant to weigh them at the circulation desk. "Hopefully this will push people to come to the gym and work out when the weigh-in," said Jones.
Jones also said they upped the number of meetings they have during the semester. "We wanted create commodity against the whole program. We have meetings every other week to help people be more accountable," said Jones
Another new addition is a nutritional aspect. Last semester the program had a lot on working out, but not enough when it came cooking for yourself and how to make healthy options. Wellness Coordinator Sasha Gregory and Assistant Director for Operational Excellence Brenda Ferguson are going to talk about what participants can eat in the dining hall to be healthy and what they can do outside of D-Hall. "We are going to have a wrap-up dinner so everyone can bring a dish they think is healthy and everyone can see what everyone else is doing," said Jones.
The team sizes have gone down as well. "Before we required five members to a team, but now we are only requiring three. Also we are going to have a prize for individuals because you may be working hard yourself and maybe your teammates have slacked off," said AKA President Tara Carr. Jones and Carr explained that the cost is now $5, and the extra money will go towards the individual surprise and materials needed for the potluck dinner.
The program is offering some specialized group fit classes for Fit Club participants only. "We wanted to try and build a whole team setting by having a group fitness class," said Jones. "The whole point of the program is to challenge you and your not being challenged if you are doing the same thing over and over so spicing it up with group fitness should help out," said Carr.
"We want to encourage everyone to take advantage of the resources that they have on campus because if you can get it now while you are on campus a lot of times you will continue to do it when you get off campus," explained Jones.
