You may have seen the signs and posters around campus for the last two weeks. It had all the images of Las Vegas and casinos: dice, poker and in big bold letters "Fantasy Casino" This event was held on Fri., Jan. 23 and put on by Longwood's Lancer Productions (LP) and TjohnE Booking & Producti on Company.

Several LP members and students helped the TjohnE men unload their huge truck on Friday afternoon to begin setting everything up in the Lankford ABC Rooms. It took over an hour because many of the casino tables were so large and it was difficult fitting them in the Student Union elevator and stairwells. By the time much of the set-up was complete, the ABC Rooms were being transformed into an actual casino, complete with floor-length black curtains, an official entrance and exit, authentic-looking game tables, brightly-colored poker chips, and an oxygen bar. In addition, it was a "black light casino," meaning that most of the regular lights were turned off and black lights were used instead, giving a trendier and fun look to the room, trying to mimic the actual casinos in Las Vegas or along the Gulf Coast.

Senior April Keeney is a general LP member and helped with both set-up and running Fantasy Casino. This was an event that LP had never put on before, and Keeney said, "We looked through the information we got on it, it looked and sounded like a good, fun event to bring, [and it] probably fit well in our budget." Keeney said there was a medium amount of student who attended the event.

Keeney said the casino contained two roulette tables, between two and three blackjack tables, two Texas Hold 'Em poker tables, as well as the oxygen bar. She explained how the event worked: "For every $10,000 people made, they could get raffle tickets for the prizes given out at the end."

Keeney called the event a success. "Students had fun, LP had fun, people got prizes, most people said they liked it and had fun [and] the company was nice to work with." However, Keeney noted some student complaints: "Because it was a black light casino, the company brought a lot of stuff, load out took an hour and 15 minutes, [there were] not enough chairs, people kept complaining about not having chairs." One participant was not informed of what flavor she was being given at the oxygen bar, and she ended up being allergic to it. However, despite the complaints, Keeney said LP would be discussing Fantasy Casino at their meeting on Jan. 26, and are probably going to look into having another similar event in the future.

For more information on LP and how to get involved with the organization, the weekly meetings are held every Tuesday nights at 8 p.m. in the ABC Rooms. Their office is located on the second floor of the Lankford Student Union, near the Office of First Year Experience and the elevator.
