Men's Soccer Edges Houston Baptist

The Longwood men's soccer team hosted Houston Baptist University, an ASC conference team on Nov. 1st at the Athletics Complex in Farmville. The Lancer's came into the match off a win at UMBC and with a record of 4-10-2 overall and 1-2 in the ASC. Houston Baptist (6-10, 2-2 ASC) came out strong to start the game, including six attempted corner kicks in the first-half. Within the first 30 minutes the game would be decided when Sophomore Chris Saul/Pasadena, Md. (Chesapeake) scored the game-winning goal for the Lancers. Off the assist from senior Brian Germain/McLean, Va (Langley) took the ball down the middle of the field before passing to Saul. Saul placed a shot into the back of HBU's net.

Saul's goal would be the only tallied goal for the Lancers' that captured the game. Another goal scoring opportunity came from senior Giovanni Peralta/Lorton (Robert E. Lee), with a break away in the last ten minutes of the match. With HBU keeper, Chris Dodd saved the shot and kept the game at 1-0. Senior Harvey Headley/Coventry, England (Stoke Park) led Longwood with four shots. Sophomore goalkeeper Joel Helmick/Springfield (W.T. Woodson) earned his third shutout of the season and posted two saves in goal for Longwood. The Lancers out shot the Huskies 11-6 while HBU had a 7-6 edge in corner kicks.

"We did what we had to do to win today," said Longwood Head Coach Jon Atkinson. "We have played better recently and the win is nice. We focused on getting the result and that's what mattered." The Lancers' take the field for their senior night on November 3rd at 4 p.m., hosting Clemson University, where the Lancers will recognize seniors, Brian Germain/McLean, Va (Langley), Giovanni Peralta/Lorton, Va (Robert E. Lee), Martin Vickerton/Derbyshire, England (Kirk Hallam Technical College), Marcus Dixon/Gloucester, Va. (Gloucester) and Chernor Diallo/ Alexandria, Va. (Mount Vernon).
