Longwood finally has a football team. SGA passed the proposal of Matthew McCloud and Kevin Tullington at their meeting on Oct. 20, after they went through a rigorous Q&A session.

The motivation came from a five-year history of regular pick-up football games, originally known as Longwood Society of Football started by alumni John Skelly and Derek Hambright. After they graduated, McCloud and Tullington took on the leadership roll of scheduling games through the Facebook group. The guys noticed a growing interest and new talent coming out every week. That's when they decided to give it a try even though they were told by the alumni that it would be impossible, advice given through past experience of being turned down.

There is no confirmed coach but they are looking and keeping their options open till they find a fully qualified candidate. Campus involvement and support is strongly encouraged.

They are trying to get equipment donations through high schools and looking at websites that sell items in bulk. They are in the process of writing proposals for a few potential sponsors. The minimum budget needed is $9,000 but without sponsorship and donations they will need at least $10,000-$12,000 to continue.

They will attend a meeting in November to try and enter in the Seaboard Conference where they will play schools like George Mason University and Valley Forge Military Academy. They also plan to schedule games outside of the conference against schools like Hampden-Sydney and Radford University.
Try-outs will be held toward the end of spring semester to make sure the team is set for Fall 2010. There is a 45 person cap. McCloud says, "We are looking for anyone who has a love for the game that just wants to play. We encourage everyone to come out on Tuesdays so we can see who will be trying out in the spring. That way we can give everyone a fair evaluation."
The team meets every Tuesday night at 7 p.m. on Iler Field behind the dining hall. There will be an interest meeting this Wednesday from 4-5 p.m. at the Health and Wellness Center in Room 305.
