While most of the student body was on campus enjoying Oktoberfest, the Longwood men's rugby team traveled to the University of Richmond for a Virginia Rugby Union (VRU) match with the Spiders. Longwood had an uncharacteristically slow start and the game was competitive for the first 15 minutes. The next 15 minutes, however, saw LU score four tries and build up a 22-0 halftime lead. Richmond came out with more energy in the second half but was still unable to score. In the end, seven total tries (two by Dan Waite, one each from Preston Leep, Jessy Kelly, Paul Brockman, TJ Van Petten and James Betz) and conversions from Patrick Baden and Austin Lux made the final score 39-0.
The VRU award four points for a win, plus a bonus point for scoring four tries or more. So far in the season, LU has the accrued the maximum points of 15 from three league matches and leads second-place Christopher Newport University (CNU) by six points. LU plays CNU in Newport News on Sat., Oct. 17 in a game that will decide the Regular Season VRU title for the men. If they win that game, the LU men will claim their fourth regular season title in the past five years and enter the state championship tournament in Roanoke on Sat. and Sun. Nov. 7-8 as the No. 1 seed.
