Longwood Celebrates Senior Night with 20-Point Win

Ryan Bogan's senior night proved to be a good one as the Lancer men's basketball team came away with a 109-89 victory against North Carolina Central University.
Bogan scored early in the game, putting Longwood in the lead. North Carolina tied the the game quickly, but Longwood pushed ahead 26-19 at the start of the second with help from sophomore guard Durann Neil, giving them a strong lead. Freshman guard Martiz Washington pushed the score to 35-24 with 6:34 left in the first half.
Longwood maintained a sizable lead throughout the first half, and a redshirt junior Dana Smith got a basket at the buzzer, pushing the score to 51-34 at halftime. Both Smith and bogan had 14 points.
Longwood continued with the lead, with six players contributing to the 73-48 score. During this time junior Kevin Swecker and freshman Antwan Carter scored, along with four other players. With 12:20 left on the clock Longwood had a 24-point lead. Bogan added a layup and Robinson sank a free throw, helping with the large lead. When a timeout was called at 7:46 mark, the Lancers Had increased their lead to 82-57.
Around the 6:30 mark North Carolina Central started to gain some momentum. They scored 10 points fairly quickly, but Swecker answered, pushing Longwood to 90 points. With 4:00 left Carter scored again, but the Tigers continued to fight and got themselves up to 96-81 with 3:17 left.
Junior Billy Robinson grabbed a rebound and Smith scored again, pushing Longwood to 100 points. Freshman Jan van der Kooji went in with 1:44 left on the clock to replace Bogan. Bogan ended his final home game with 19 points and six assists. When the final buzzer sounded the Lancers celebrated a 20-point victory.
"I'm feeling great right now," said Bogan as he enjoyed a postgame cupcake. Smith ended the game with 24 points and 10 rebounds. Swecker finished with 14 points, six assists and three steals, and Robinson scored 13 points and added 10 rebounds. Carter contributed 10 points and six rebounds, Washington added nine points and Neil had 10 assists.
"We wanted to get out there, get sweaty, get our hearts pumping and have fun. We wanted to give Ryan a good last home game. We work hard for each other. We are a family. Families stick together," said Smith.
After reflecting on his time at Longwood, Bogan said he was happy with his time here. "It was a great experience to play at a Division I-level school. I always said playing at a Division I school was something I was going to do," said Bogan.
The final game of the season will be against NJIT in Newark, N.J., Wednesday, March 4, at 7 p.m.
