The men’s rugby team ran out to an early 19-0 lead over visiting Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) Saturday at the First Avenue field and finished well with a 26-15 victory in the season opener for both teams. Long runs by Jaye Kennedy, James Betz and captain Ben Adams set up three first-half tries. Austin Lux dominated lineouts while senior Brian Hancock solidified the set scrum play. Conversions by rookie Patrick Baden gave LU a 19-0 lead before VCU scored a penalty to make the halftime score 19-3. The second half saw a lot of substitutions and better play from VCU, but LU held firm and added one more try and conversion to make the final score 26-15.
Todd Miller Memorial Tournament Schedule
This Friday and Saturday, Feb. 20 and 21, the LU men’s and women’s rugby clubs and Sigma Sigma Sigma sorority will host the Todd Miller Memorial Tournament in honor of Todd Miller, who died last year after injuries suffered during a rugby game. Friday afternoon at 3 p.m. at the First Avenue field, a memorial will be placed in Todd’s honor. Saturday, LU will play Hampden-Sydney at 9 a.m. and games with VMI, Virginia Tech and the University of Virginia women will follow. The tournament finals will be at 2:30 p.m. All money raised will go to a scholarship fund in Miller’s name from the Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Capital Area. Admission is free.
