After splitting their first two games of the season at the ISES Cancer Awareness Tip-Off hosted by Elon University over the weekend, Longwood's women's basketball team will return to the floor tomorrow night against St Francis (Pa.) college at 7 p.m. at Willett Hall.
The Lancers (1-1) head into the game against St. Francis coming off a 58-54 overtime victory against Elon in the final game of the tournament. Senior Anna Steg led Longwood with 15 points to go along with 10 rebounds for her first double-double of the season. She was followed closely by fellow senior Amber Sims who poured in 11 to go along with seven rebounds.
Longwood held leads of as much as nine on the night before Elon battled back to tie the score with 32 seconds left in regulation. The Phoenix were not able to keep pace with the Lancers in overtime, however.
The Lancers came into the matchup with Elon following a tough defeat at the hands of UNC Wilmington to kick off the season Friday night, Nov 14. Longwood finished the first half tied with the Seahawks at 36 but then went cold from the field in the second half, shooting 21 percent from the floor. UNC Wilmington took advantage and rode a second-half surge to a big win over the Lancers 71-50.
Freshman Sierra Fletcher paced the Lancers with 15 points on four of eight shooting from the field followed by sophomore Cierra Baker with eight points and a game-high eight rebounds.
Overall, Longwood has been led in their two efforts by Steg ,who is averaging 11 points and eight rebounds per night. Baker has added the defensive work with five steals and four blocks in the team's two contests. As a whole, the team has leaned on a youth movement centered around Fletcher. Lancer freshmen are currently making up 40 percent of the team's point production on the season, and Fletcher has made up almost half of that total. She was the leading scorer in the Lancers' opening game against UNC Wilmington.
Wednesday, Nov. 19 will be the second time Longwood has met Saint Francis, the last coming last year when Saint Francis defeated the Lancers 65-55 in Loretto, Pa. A win would give the Lancers their first victory in a home opener since defeating Norfolk State two years ago.
Following their contest against St. Francis the Lancers will head to the road to take on Campbell from the Atlantic South Conference. Game time is set for 7 p.m. Saturday night, Nov. 22.
