In their Atlantic Soccer Conference opener, the Longwood University men's soccer team dominated visiting New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT) en route to a 4-1 victory Saturday, Oct. 4.

"We've created chances all season, and this time we were able to put them away," said Head Coach Jon Atkinson in a press release on Saturday. "We took timely shots and were able to put some points on the board. We defended the ball stoutly and came out with a good conference win under our belts."

The Lancers got things going in the 17th minute of play with an unassisted goal from freshman Kevin Chico, his third goal in four games. They would later stretch their lead to 2-0 when sophomore Harvey Headley sent a beautiful cross through the box to junior Brian Germain for his first goal of the season.

The Lancers took that lead to halftime and began to pour it on in the latter parts of the match. After a dazzling pass from junior Martin Vickerton, freshman Chris Saul scored his first goal of the season, giving the Lancers a 3-0 cushion in the 82nd minute of play.

The Highlanders would connect on their lone goal of the match just seconds after; however, the Lancers would answer one more time. Just minutes after the Highlanders got on the board, the Lancers' season-high fourth goal came off of a free kick from the top of the box when Vickerton found Headley at the near post where he headed the ball into the back of the net for a 4-1 lead and final score.

The Lancers also got a strong contribution from freshman goalkeeper Joel Helmick, who got the win after picking up five saves.

"We just got the job done," senior forward Marcus Dixon said. "We did what we needed to do to win, and that's all that matters in the end."

The team shut out the Navy Midshipmen 2-0 on Tuesday night in Annapolis, Md. They will stay on the road for their next two games, taking on North Florida on Oct. 14 and UVA in Charlottesville on Oct. 21, before returning home to take on the Liberty Flames on Oct. 24 at the Athletics Complex.
