Women's Rugby Rolls over W&M – VT Next
With three-quarters of the Virginia Rugby Union (VRU) league complete, Longwood women's rugby is still looking for real competition. Last Saturday at First Avenue Field, the women took on William & Mary. Previously W&M had beaten VCU, Longwood victim last week. This was to be a more competitive game for LU but early scores from Longwood made the game a rout. Seven tries, two each from Alea Newman and Kaelynn Nill and one each from “Bruiser” Elliott, Ashley Irby and Bridget Dykes, plus five conversions from Katie Jo Prince made the final score 45-7. Two apparent scores from team captain Ashley Hartley were called back, which would have widened the Lancers’ margin of victory had they stood. As the game wore on, LU substituted liberally but the outcome was never in doubt.
This week, the 3-0 Longwood women take on the Division I Virginia Tech women at the First Avenue field at 11 a.m. This game will be excellent preparation for the showdown with Mary Washington on Oct. 24 in Fredericksburg. The MWU game will determine the top seed headed to the VRU playoffs. Schedules, standings and results are posted on longwoodrugby.org.
Last-Second Score Lifts Men's Rugby over VT
Behind 12-5 at halftime and with the rain pouring down in Blacksburg, the Longwood men's rugby team faced a difficult comeback. The rain and the mud made ball handling very difficult and Virginia Tech proved a formidable obstacle. The first half was dominated by VT, and the only Lancer score was a 70-meter run by captain Ben Adams. As the second half started, VT scored again to lead 19-5 putting the Lancers down by two tries. Adams again provided the spark by scoring from 10 meters out. With time running down to the last 12 minutes, sophomore flyhalf Preston Leep took control of the game. First, a score up the middle by Leep and a conversion by Adams tied the score at 19 apiece. Finally, as time was running down, Leep scored again and the final whistle blew to give LU the 24-19 victory.
The B-side also claimed victory. Led by two tries from Dustin Meadows, the B-side won 17-7. This gives the team (A and B combined) a 5-0 record in Virginia Rugby Union play this fall. Saturday the men will play at the First Avenue field against Christopher Newport University. This game is a rematch of an early-season matchup in Newport News which was won by Longwood 8-7. The game is at 2 p.m. Schedules, standings and results are posted on longwoodrugby.org.
