Women's Rugby Takes Opener 80-5
The Longwood women's rugby team traveled to Richmond's Dorey Park to take on the University of Richmond in the season opener for both teams. The season's start was delayed one week due to bad weather from Hurricane Hanna last week. The scoring was started by Bridget Dykes and LU never looked back. Scoring 14 tries and five conversions, the Lancers overpowered the Spiders. A final score by Ashley Hartley, a Longwood player filling in for the short-handed Richmond team, made the final score 80-5. Five tries by Kaelynn Nill, two tries each by Alea Newman and Ashley Irby and one try each from Maryann Hull, Whitney Robbins, Erica Rhodes and Taryn Langmead, and conversion kicks from Katie Jo Prince (3) and Nikole Widder-Varhegy (2) completed the scoring.
Lineup: T.Langmead, L.Witcher, W.Robins, S.Railton, A.Irby, N.Elliott, T.Soeder, A.Hartley, B.Dykes, M.Hodges, K.Nill, N.Widder-Varhegy, E.Rhodes, A.Newman, K.Prince.
Substitutes: M.Hull, C.McGill, M.Santiago, G.Gillis, K.Bashaw, A.Colley, B.Jordan
The women's next match is Saturday, Sept. 20 at 11 a.m. at the First Avenue Field against the VCU Rams.
Men's Rugby Defeats CNU 8-7
The Longwood men's rugby team traveled to Newport News to take on Christopher Newport University in the season-opening game for both teams. The CNU program has been building for the past few years, and this game was expected to be a very close contest.
For most of the game LU dominated territory but was unable to put in a score. In the 25th minute of the game LU was awarded a penalty in close and senior captain Ben Adams converted to make the score 3-0. That score would hold up until the 70th minute of the game. In between, the 95-degree heat took its toll. Both teams used their maximum allowable substitutes, and the referee took several breaks to reduce the effects of the heat.
With LU playing most of the second half in the CNU end, James "Snake" Rasnake scored what would be the winning score to make it 8-0. CNU came back very strong to score in the 75th minute and make the final 8-7. With many first and second-year players on the field, the difference in the game was the senior leadership of Chris Davis, Adams and Brian Hancock and an excellent game by Paul Brockman.
Lineup:B.Hancock, J.Bittner, T.Knowles, A.Lux, S.Windsor, B. Adams, J.Betz, T.Gunnell, J. Singer, P.Leep, C.Davis, R.Ballinger, J.Kennedy, P.Brockman, L.Fightmaster.
Substitutes: J.Reed, J.Cabinus, D.Meadows, P.Parker, J.Rasnake, W.Price, T.Van Patten
The men's next game is Saturday, Sept. 20 at 1 p.m. at the First Avenue Field against Washington & Lee.
