"Joanie on the Pony," which normally stands tall and proud on the Colonnades of Longwood's campus, is being sheltered in the Longwood Center for Visual Arts (LCVA) after vandalism was committed to the iconic statue over the weekend. According to an email, the sculpture is a reduced version of the bronze 1915 monument "Joan of Arc" by Anna Hyatt Huntington (1876-1973), one of the foremost American sculptors of the early 20th century, known primarily for her equestrian statues. Guns. Some say they kill people, others say they don't. To add to this endless debate, some pose the question: should guns be permitted on college campuses? Students for Concealed Carry on Campus (SCCC) are advocates of this important debate. While the SCCC currently has no active involvement on Longwood's campus, other Virginia universities may be advancing a step further in allocating licenses for students and staff members to bear arms on the typical college scene. The sounds are heard daily. The noise of wheels rolling down the sidewalk in front of Hiner and the screeches of power slides of the skateboards in front of the Ruffner Fountain are heard across campus. These students responsible for these echoes aren't just skaters anymore; they might be the future members of the newest club on campus. (0) comments
Pilots in Overshot Airliner Fiasco "Distracted by Laptops" According to Fox News, the Northwest Airline pilots who overshot a Minnesota runway by more than 150 miles last Wednesday were distracted by personal discussions and their personal computers while in the cockpit. The announcement is a violation of company policy, said the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB). The pilots, who were both separately interviewed on Sunday, told investigators that they simply "lost track of time" while discussing a new monthly crew flight scheduling system imposed by Northwest. Off-campus housing is defined as any accommodations that are leased from a private landlord within the Farmville community. While many returning Longwood students will once again call the dorms and Longwood-managed apartments home, there are those students who will be applying to live off-campus in one of the several off-campus housing units. In a small rural town where the wind blows and the children play ball at the park, there seems to be a lot of commotion. Both Longwood and Farmville Police have received a steady amount of noise complaints. This causes a frustration with both Longwood and Farmville residents. (1) comment
All over campus, department walls are being torn down. New and existing interdisciplinary minors are offered by a variety of different departments. For those students who are interested in the environment, the Environmental Studies minor is offered for only 24 credit hours. (0) comments
Two reporters at James Madison University (JMU) have received judicial charges after attempting to cover a story, and I am not a happy camper. I am going to go ahead and let you all know that I realized I am being terribly biased in this column; however, that is the joy of a column. (0) comments
