SGA Budget Cuts Result in Less Funding for Club Sports

Clubs at Longwood are now feeling the effects of the recession as the fall semester begins.

Club sport participants saw some new changes as they began their fall term here at Longwood University. The effects of the economy have now hit home. The Student Government Association (SGA) had to make some drastic budget cuts for 2009 causing a number of club sports to lose their funding all together. (3) comments

The Longwood men's rugby team dominated Washington & Lee (W&L) University 54-10 on a rainy Family Weekend game at the First Avenue field Sat., Sept. 26. Longwood started slow but opened the scoring with a Patrick Baden penalty kick and a try from Preston Leep. (0) comments

This past Sat., Sept. 26, the Longwood University's men and women cross country teams placed seventh out of eight teams at the Colonial Inter-Regional Challenge. The meet was hosted in Williamsburg by the College of William & Mary. (0) comments

The women's golf team hit the road this past weekend, playing in Sunset Beach, NC for the Sea Trail Intercollegiate. In a most bizarre and heartbreaking finish, the Lancers ended up with the lowest number of strokes out of every team in the tournament, but did not come up with the win. (0) comments

Sophomore tennis player Nobu Tanaka has a lot to be excited about this fall. He is the first Longwood tennis player to be nationally ranked, currently at No. 101. His first reaction to learning that he was nationally ranked was disbelief. "I found out two weeks ago, a friend told me. (0) comments

Sports have already been embedded into the very fabric of American culture. That goes without saying, but that impact is magnified from September to February. Yes, of course you have the World Series in October, but it is that one Saturday, Sunday, Monday, and sometimes Thursday of those six months that holds more meaning to peoples' lives than one might think.
