Moratoriums not Curbing NCAA Membership Growth; New Division Possible Future

The total number of schools in the NCAA has increased by 55 percent from 665 to 1,033 since 1973 when it split into its current three-division structure. With this in mind, rising membership growth is coming too quickly despite numerous moratoriums and deadlines designed to delay schools' transition into the NCAA and in between divisions. In their Atlantic Soccer Conference opener, the Longwood University men's soccer team dominated visiting New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT) en route to a 4-1 victory Saturday, Oct. 4. "We've created chances all season, and this time we were able to put them away," said Head Coach Jon Atkinson in a press release on Saturday. (0) comments

By John Graham Community SubmissionWomen's Rugby Knocks Off Virginia TechIn three game this fall the Longwood women's rugby team has outscored its Virginia Rugby Union (VRU) Division II opponents 160-22, with Kaelynn Nill leading the way with nine tries.  This past Saturday at the First Avenue field, the team was tested by Division I Virginia Tech. The Lancer men's golf team continued its strong play, finishing second out of 14 teams at the Cleveland State Invitational held at Sand Ridge Golf Club in Avon, Oh., on Sept. 29 and 30. South Dakota State University took home the win with an overall score of 870. (0) comments

Longwood Winterguard -- Mirage

Is it a "Mirage," or is it really here? That would be the official name for Longwood University's winter guard. Originally, color guard started in the military accompanied by a band that played patriotic songs. Along with a band to keep the soldiers' spirits up, they sent soldiers to bare their colors with pride. (1) comment

Men's Lacrosse Club Team Returns to Longwood

At this time last year, the men's club lacrosse team consisted of nothing more than a couple of students who wanted to play lacrosse trying to set informational meetings for other interested students. Now, the team has a considerable budget, practices on Tuesdays and Thursdays and has scrimmaged with Longwood's women's lacrosse team at the Athletics Complex. (0) comments
